This weekend saw me exploring York Open Studios, an annual tradition for me and some friends, on Saturday and attending my first meeting for North Yorkshire Open Studios on Sunday.
North Yorkshire Open Studios is an artist led event, run by a voluntary steering group of North Yorkshire based artists. North Yorkshire Open Studios enables artists and makers to open their studios, meet, promote, demonstrate and sell their work direct to the public, over the first two weekends in June.
York Open Studios is run as a separate event due to the size and artist clusters in York alone, so York artists are encouraged to apply for one or the other event.
I really love browsing the website or brochure for a few favourites and a few new people to find, then plotting a course to walk/drive and stumble on a few surprises as I go. Often the artists are in their own homes, so it feels a real honour to be allowed into peoples private spaces. The artists often set up part of their homes as a mini art gallery and, where possible, make their studio space available. I always take a little stash of cash to spend or have a budget. I support as many artists as I can simply by buying cards, but I do love to buy artworks if I can, even if it is a low budget bargain to pin to my own studio wall.
This year I treated myself to a couple of really gorgeous abstract mugs from Philip Magson Ceramics. A teatowel and cards from Gerard Hobson, cards from many others and a pair of mini masterpieces from Lesley Birch.
In addition...SOooo much inspiration for what I could do for my own Open Studios in the first two weeks of June this year. For one thing, my studio is in the attic and accessed by a ladder...which would be a health and safety nightmare, so I shall be recreating my studio downstairs and setting up a mini gallery along side this. I have a 10 metre project planned, which I will be showing, at whatever stage it is at by then. So many ideas....and now...lots of print material to distribute too to promote North Yorkshire Open Studios.
